After seen years of serving the students at the Woodland Job Corps Center, it has come time to say goodbye.

Mrs. C being recognized by the volunteers as a STAR

It is time to say farewell to the friends, the confidences, the celebrations, and the tears. The program has not been officially funded for years, and the budget has finally caught up with the program.  Unfortunately the budget does not recognize the passion of the volunteers, the achievements of the students, or the gifts of the coordinator.

There have been very special volunteers throughout the life of the program, and some of them were able to gather together for a final party in the STARS room.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR TIME, YOUR ENERGY, YOUR GIFTS, AND YOUR PASSION.

The students have been touched in ways that will go on for generations. These brief seven years have left impressions that we hope will be felt for lifetimes.

For all of her adult life, Angela Sherrod has wanted to “give back” – and Give Back she certainly has!  She GAVE BACK to our country, by serving over 20 years on active duty in Army Logistics.  Then, as her 2009 retirement (at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer-3) drew near, she went looking for a new opportunity to GIVE BACK—only this time it was to be on a much more personal, close-contact basis: with Woodland S.T.A.R.S.! Raman Pathik is on a mission.  Like countless immigrants before him, Raman came to the U.S. over 30 years ago from his native India in search of a better life. While he has certainly succeeded in doing just that—with over 30 years’ experience as a successful entrepreneur and business leader—his life’s richest rewards have come from helping others to build and enhance their Quality of Life in all areas of the Mind, Body, and Spirit. As part of the recent Mentors’ Bi-Annual Meeting (March 3rd), we spent time focusing on several of the main challenges which the STARS program is facing today.  For a time, the group was broken-out into two groups– the male mentors in one room; the female mentors in another– to facilitate discussion of matters which are perhaps unique to the mentoring of male and female students, respectively. Here is a ink to an article by a good friend of STARS; Marcia Hall.  For current and aspiring employees, it is important to develop soft skills as well as trade skills to be able to succeed in the workforce.  As tutors and mentors we also need to model these skills, as well as teach them to the students.

This was shared by one of the mentors at the training yesterday.

I have been a mentor with the stars volunteer mentoring program for just about 6 months now. Being a mentor is a real motivator for me, as my mentee has shared it has been a motivator for her as well. I am just thankful that I have the ability to be empowered enough to make a positive difference in some else’s life/lifestyle. On 3/3/2012 I attended my first bi-annual mentoring meeting if I say no more the meeting was awesome, I am delighted to be a part of STARS Volunteer Mentoring Program….Most of all I am very thankful to have been chosen to be a part of the program.
